Dull ache in left thigh and hip

I have a dull ache in my left thigh and hip. I don't feel any pain at all when I'm moving but more when I'm laying or sitting for longer periods of time. It's not unbearable but can be annoying and sometimes a little painful. I've had it for about 2 weeks now and it hasn't gotten any better. I'm 16 and I've had problems with my knee on this leg from playing basketball, softball and other sports

Dull, achey pain with prolonged sitting or lying but not with movement could be a ligamentous strain, not unusual in the thigh and hip of someone actively involved in sports. Ligaments can usually be identified as the source through selective range of motion testing. Usually, a strained muscle or tendon will hurt when challenged with resistance. A sprained ligament will hurt when any tension is applied, regardless of muscular contraction. Is there a definite area of tenderness that can be provoked with finger pressure? Is there any visible swelling or redness?

Have you iced the area since injuring it? Also, since you mention prior knee injury, it's possible that you are experiencing compensatory pain from a shifting biomechanical weight-bearing posture, in order to favor the injured knee. This can suddenly overload associated support tissues and synergistic muscles, which are not conditioned to take the extra load. See a sports injury doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment. It should resolve quickly with proper care.

Dull achey pain in the thigh/hip area can come from a number of sources, including the hip, the spine, the knee, muscles, tendons or a bursa. The fact that you get the pain at rest, and not with activity can help to 'stage' the condition, once it is identified. You should communicate with a health care provider about other symptoms you may be having including but not limited to fevers, sweats, numbness, tingling. Also you need to provide information regarding your current lever of activity, and past medical history. Proper care of your condition begins with a thorough consultation, history and exam. From there you can design an effective program to get back to feeling 100%.

Sorry to hear you are in pain. The fact that your pain comes while you are lying or sitting is a pretty big indicator that their is an issue with you hips or low-back. Even if there is no pain in those places. The nerves to your leg and hips (and even your knee) originate in the low-back. These issues may be the result of your increased activity level. I'm all for sports. My suggestion would be to find a good chiropractor in your area to do a thorough assessment. Then you can make an educated decision on a treatment plan. Good luck.

It's sounds like setting up an appointment with a chiropractor would be they way to go on this one. The issue appears to be musculoskeletal in nature.

Often pain in the thigh or hip is due to triggerpoints or spasms in the Glute Medius and piriformis muscles. You can try and stretch the area by crossing you leg over your knee (figure 4 style) and then leaning over it to see if you feel it stretching or pulling. If you spend 10 minutes stretching the hip it will often allow you to get through the day. Why are these so tight you may ask. Well often the pelvis will get out of alignment and cause these muscles to go into spasm. My suggestion is have it evaluated in a chiropractic office.

Can you touch the pain or is it deep? Does it happen when you move the hip around or only after you have been on the leg? It may be referred pain from your knee. If the knee isn't working properly, the hip will adjust as necessary to accommodate, causing overuse of tendons and thus pain. At 16, I would urge you to get this looked at before it turns into something larger.

It seems that you are suffering from SI dysfunction ( Scaroiliac joint), which is the most common low back pain among your group age. It also seems that your low back pain is related to you know pain as well, you are better off to book an appointment with a chiropractor to assess your entire kinetic chain.

It doesn't surprise me that you've had knee pain as well on this side. Joint dysfunction works like that. It sounds like it could be pelvic dysfunction, and my guess would be irritation and dysfunction in the sacroiliac joint, common with your symptoms. Sometimes when there is joint dysfunction in the hip or pelvis, stress is translated down into the knee and ankle, and often times up into the lumbar spine. You should schedule an appointment with a chiropractor, asking for a full examination as well as xrays.
