This problem is not in my area of expertise but it happened to me so I think I can give you the answer to your question. The cribriform bony plate, between her brain and her nasal sinuses, was probably broken in the accident and now cerebrospinal fluid is probably draining from around her brain into the nasal cavities. The danger is from infection from the nose getting into the cerebrospinal fluid around the brain, althoiugh that didn't happen with me and may not happen with your cousin..

This can be a neurological emergency as that fluid is probably Cerebral Spinal Fluid. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cerebrospinal_fluid_rhinorrhoea

Sometimes the fluid stops by itself, but if it doesn't it needs to be surgically repaired.

Your cousin needs an evaluation by a neurosurgeon ASAP. This description is highly suspicious for a cerebrospinal leak. Certainly, call the doctor that has been caring for your cousin immediately and ask for direction. There is a significant risk of serious infection such as meningitis. Since office evaluation by neurosurgery can often take several weeks if not months, you may need to go to the ER for immediate evaluation, possible admission, and hospital consult with the neurosurgical service on call.

It is possible that there is a fracture to the bone, but what I have also seen is a tear in the falx cerebrae, the tissue that surrounds the brain. It is located in the middle of the skull and within this area is where the cerebral spinal fluid is produced. One of the very best therapies for her condition is CranioSacral Therapy. I would not be surprised if you found someone practicing in the Caribbean. You can search for a practitioner through the Upledger Institute or you can check with local massage therapists. CST, Craniosacral Therapy is a very gentle therapy that will help reduce any inflammation caused from a fracture, and improve the healing process with no fear of causing further damage.

Another unusual situation is Irritable Bowel Syndrome, which is not unusual after a trauma. All systems of the body function together and after a hard blow to the body it can cause a symptom known as deafferentation; where the nerves are not firing properly from the organs to the brain. The nose is the uppermost area of the digestive tract and nose drainage could be a sign of irritable bowel or inflammation in the colon.

If you decide to follow the other recommendations to take an antibiotic, I suggest a natural herbal form of Cayenne and Goldenseal, taken with food. It is a very powerful antibiotic and should be taken three times a day with meals.

Good Luck,

Yours in Health Naturally,

Recommend to be seen by Neurosurgeon, analyze the fluid and consult for a potential Brain fluid leak after a basal skull fracture. Watch your cousin for deterioration, fever, worsening neurological condition ( might be difficult if your cousin is not neurologically capable)

clear watery fluid leaking from the nose or ears after head injury may be spinal fluid , which circulates within the brain and spine. Thee is danger of infection if this persists. The patient should see a neuro specialist and may require MRI and isotope studies.

Please contact and bring your cousin to see a neurosurgeon. He need further examination according to the context you have mentioned above. Maybe special dynamic MRI (cine-MRI) or CT(enhanced CT) scan is needed for the final diagnosis which may be leaking of CSF (cerebral-spinal fluid). Hope this help you and hope your cousin get well as soon as possible. Best.

Leaky CSF usually leaves a sweet taste in the mouth. This is likely what the fluid is. Imaging needs to be performed. It sounds as though there is a fracture at the cribriform plate. This needs medical attention as an infection here causes meningitis.
